A Modem is a piece of hardware that connects your device to the internet.
The Modem connects from either your router or directly to your computer within an ethernet cable
and then it translates the data from digital into analog so it can be transmitted similarly to how a radio sends information.
Original Modems where known as dial-up modems as they were used primarily for phones.
